Barking Irons

January 23, 2007

bi1.JPG

Even before the movie Gangs of New York was put out, designer brothers Daniel and Michael Casarella evoked a passion for 19th century New York history. They have a remarkable personal collection of clothing and other memorabilia that dates back to that era. From that stemmed their desire to create fashion label which includes t-shirts, cut and sew pieces, as well as jewelry for both men and women that take influence from 19th century New York. The label, Barking Irons, does a terrific job of sticking to their philosophy and theme for each and every product that they produce. As a result, they have garnered the attention of GQ, Nylon for Guys and The New York Times Magazine. Check out their collection at Barking Irons.

Complex shows us the Vans crossover with the 3 shops DQM, HUF, and Kicks/Hi. A couple of months ago, these were floating around the net and were rumored to not be released but I guess they’re out according to Complex. From the pic, the chukka boot collaborations with the 3 stores look really good. At $95, they won’t break your bank as well, so pick ’em up if you have the chance.

Afro Samurai

January 16, 2007

afro-samurai.JPG

I don’t usually follow much anime but here’s one that really caught my attention. Afro Samurai, as the name suggests, is about a black samurai who seeks to avenge the murder of his father. Sounds like your typical story but what’s salient about this anime is that it features the voice of Samuel L. Jackson. As always Mr. Jackson voices many memorable quotes in his movies and Afro Samurai is of no exception. There are lines such as “AFRO! Don’t fight this fucker! He’s got arrows and grenades-n-shit!”. Afro Samurai also has an impressive soundtrack which boasts a lineup that includes RZA, Q-tip, Talib Kweli and Big Daddy Kane. Whether or not you’re an avid anime watcher, this is definitly one that’s worth checking out. Afro Samurai is currently airing on Spike TV.

Ecsotype Bag

January 8, 2007

ecos.JPG

As of late, I’ve really been feeling Boston bags and here’s one that caught my eye via Josh Spear. From Australia, Ecsotype makes various types of bags making use of a glossy look on leather. The ‘School’ model masterfully combines glossy ‘pull-up’ cowhide, marine spliced rope, stainless steel hardware, and woven webbing to create a magnificent bag for all purposes.

Nanda Clocky

December 28, 2006

nanda.JPG
Waking up early is hard enough as it is and the winter mornings just make it all that much harder. Well here’s a cool item that helps, or rather forces you to wake up. Like your typical alarm clock with a snooze button, the Nanda Clocky comes with a slight variation – wheels. The Nanda Clocky rolls away looking for places to hide in the room when you hit the snooze button. Playing hide and seek with this in the morning will pretty much ensure that you will get up when you have to. The Clocky comes in white, aqua and mint.

palla1.JPG

PingMag introduced and conducted an interview with Japanese artist Kazuhiko Kawahara, otherwise known as Palla. With a background in architecture, Palla took interest in photography and naturally he was led to taking pictures of cityscape structures. In addition, he would make adjustments to the photos by duplicating layers and rotating or flipping it over the original image. The result is a pleasing array of lines and patterns of urban structures. From the interview, you can get a sense that Palla puts a lot of thought into each piece, as it requires meticulous judgment on his part of how much to shift the images. All of his works dating back to 2002 are available on his weblog Pallalink.net.

LED Message Mirror

December 24, 2006

mirror_speakeasy.jpg

This is something I need in the morning. Especially when I’m fanatically trying to make it on time for work or class, I wouldn’t mind having this LED message mirror from SUCK UK in my restroom. You can also customize the font and add special effects from a remote control or your PC. Although the only things you can display is the time, date and personalized messages, it still looks pretty cool and as long as you have 300 euros to blow, it seems like a great item (or one of those cool things you love to brag about) for your home. With this mirror available for retail sale, you can’t help but predict that soon enough we will have widgets on our mirror providing the essential information we need.

Ocean’s 13 – Teaser

December 21, 2006

I always enjoyed the ‘Ocean’s’ movies whether it was with the coolest of the cool, Frank Sinatra, and his Rat Pack friends in the 1960s version of Ocean’s 11 or with the George Clooney and his friends in the 2001 remake of Ocean’s 11 and Ocean’s 12. I thought the remake of Ocean’s 11 was terrific. It was very stylish, the dialogue was witty, the soundtrack was superb and the characters of the movie were memorable. To round it all up, the plot was pretty good as well. Although I did not enjoy Ocean’s 12 as much as the others and thought it wasn’t particularly necessary to come up with a sequel, I still thought it looked great on screen (visually) and overall, it was fairly entertaining.

Well, it looks like Daniel Ocean and the rest of the Ocean’s crew are back in Ocean’s 13 (what other name did you expect?), the final installment of the ‘Ocean’s’ trilogy. Although Julia Roberts and Catherine Zeta-Jones will not be returning in this film, I can’t wait to see this. With its great cast, the directorial style of Steven Soderbergh, the casting additions of Ellen Barkin and the legendary Al Pacino, you can’t help but to look forward to this. What I love most about the ‘Ocean’s’ films is that its about the entertainment and its style. They’re not about trying to make cinematic history or looking to sweep the Oscars, its just a crew of great actors having fun and putting on a show for its audience. You can definitely say it stays true to the philosophy of what the Rat Pack did back in the 1960s version.

Roberts Radio – Revival

December 21, 2006

roberts_radio_speakeasy.jpg

I’m loving this retro looking radio created by UK manufacturers Roberts Radio. The radio called “Revival” is the proper throwback to the significant style of the 1950s. “Revival”‘s wooden cases are made by British craftsmen and covered with a choice of leatherette, real leather or suedette. It comes in various colours and available through their website.

Horem pádem (Up and Down)

December 21, 2006

horem.JPG

As Christmas holidays kicked off into full swing, I had the opportunity to pick up a couple of movies to watch. One of these was a 2004 Czech film Horem pádem, which was translated simply as Up and Down in English. Director Jan Hrebejk masterfully portrays the everyday lives of Czechs from different social backgrounds. The overall movie I’d say would fall into the Drama category, with an abundance of comic relief. The beauty of this film is how it seamlessly integrates the storylines of three groups of individual. The movie kicks off when smugglers of immigrants discover a baby in the back of their truck. Rather than heartlessly leaving the baby to die, they bring him to a pawn shop where he is to be put for sale. In another scene, a soccer hooligan’s wife desperate wants a baby but is unable to have one. They are also unable to adopt due to the husband’s criminal record stemming from soccer. And then there’s the story of a dying professor whose dying wish is to divorce his separated wife so that he can marry his girlfriend. These three stories inevitably coincide with one another throughout the movie. If ever you get the chance, this is one movie you should check out.
